The Floating Floor Solution for Soundproofing a Timber Joist Floor.

High soundproofing performance and surpasses building regulations while losing minimal room height. This is the Ideal Solution to Soundproofing a Solid Joist Floor when there is no access to the ceiling below or the joist cavity, for higher performance with ceiling and/or cavity access see the Soundproofing Floor Options.
Soundproofing a timber joist floor with no access to the cavity or ceiling below

Floating Floor Solution (15mm Above)

Application: Remedial and Refurbishment.
Simple slim solution offering a high performance and absolute minimal loss of living space, where there is only access to the floor above and no access to the cavity or the ceiling below e.g. in apartment dwellings.

Construction: (Timber Joist Floor):
- sacrificial layer or FINISHED surface
- 15mm Phonewell® Sound Insulation
- optional 3mm hardboard
- existing floorboards
- Timber Joists (unknown cavity)
- existing plasterboard or lath and plaster ceiling below.

Materials List (available from our stockists)
- Phonewell® Acoustic Insulation on Floor (1200mm x 800mm x 15mm)
- Phonewell® Eco-Tape
- optional 3mm hardboard, and tacks, to make floor level and sealed
- Flexible mastic or Acoustic sealant

Instructions: (have you considered Flanking Noise?)
Floor
1.
Examine the timber sub-deck and fill any holes or gaps with flexible mastic or acoustic sealant, tradesmen will often tack down 3mm hardboard sheets to level and seal.  Also seal around the perimeter walls.
2. Ensure the floor surface is clean and even.
3. Begin in one corner and lay the Phonewell® boards on the sub-deck, butted tightly up to the perimeter walls. Do not screw or nail the boards down.
4. Butt each Phonewell® board up tightly to each other, leaving no gaps.  Lay the boards in a brickwork formation. See Cutting Phonewell®.
5. Install the finished floor surface as per Fitting Floor Finishes over Phonewell®.
6. Fit skirting boards ensuring no contact with the floor – leave a 2mm gap.
7. Consider treating any identified flanking walls with Phonewell®.
